Be Enough Me: Standing Taller in My Running Shoes



In less than two weeks I will be lacing up the running shoes to run a half marathon.

Believe it or not, training has been harder for this distance than it was for the FULL marathon I ran back in May…

I don’t know why that is.

I have been running pretty consistently every week and on “off” days I have been firing up the DVD player and working through the 30-day Shred hosted by that #evilJillian.

Yet, during my training runs, I have found that I’m tired…not  physically, but mentally. My brain has just been reaking havoc on the self talk and saying “You know what? You’ve done enough for today. Let’s stop now.” And I listen. I don’t want to argue, not even with myself.

It’s been awful.

Then, I saw a re-run of the movie ‘Rockyand the fire was stoked. I mean, really. How could one NOT be motivated by “Gonna Fly Now” and the leaping up the the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art?

I now have a new spring to my step and if a side of beef were hanging around, I’d punch it and say “Whadda think about THAT evilJillian?”

Even better is the fact that all that yip-yapping the brain has been doing for weeks has been silenced. I’ve been saying “Good job, only more mile’, or ‘you got this’….or even…’you are a rock star’!”  That confident self-talk has been just what I needed.

Now, the training I have been doing feels enough.

    I so get that mental exhaustion! And you’re right, turning off that voice is all it takes to just get the workout done and back into a good place.

      I have only ever done one as a team (always the bike leg)…too scared to do a whole one by myself.

    I’m training for one too, in December! I’m doing pretty well so far but this will be my first half so it’s going to get harder here pretty soon. Maybe I need to watch “Rocky”?! 😉

      Yes, I remember you saying that during the BlogHer 5k…but couldn’t remember when you were running it….

    Woo! So glad you’ve found your stride (literally?). I hear you about the negative self-talk, and I’ve shut down a lot of runs this season that way (if I’ve made it out the door in the first place).

    You’re going to be amazing. Enjoy every minute of it. The race is just a victory lap. :)

      Thanks Tracy!! It has been such a rough road for this one…I think my mind was just, really? You want to do what? Again? haha.

      But body is winning out…come hell or high water, I’m going to finish this one too! :)

    Oh you are a rockstar, PX90 holy good god woman, I can’t sit through the commercials for that DVD..let alone do it. GOOD FOR YOU!!!!!! So envious of your strength. Wow!!!!

    I love the Rocky movies they inspire and motivate me. They are like a love note to the human spirit and for that, I can’t turn them off…my husband makes fun of the fact that I am such a girly girly girl…but I have such love for Rocky.

    Go Kelly!!!!!!! I’m cheering you on from here!

      I have found that my favorite P90x workout is the Kenpo….(kick boxing). I feel so bad-ass after doing that one!! I needed to throw some punches that day…so it worked. But believe me…I am feeling it now! 😉

      Rocky is just awesome! :) Love that movie!

      That music is so awesome isn’t it? You can’t help but put your arms up in the air like a prize fighter when listening to it!

    I hate that “why are you bothering with the run today?” inner voice, and it’s very loud to me (especially before I find my stride – usually for the first 2-3 miles).

    The way I’ve been combating it is to listen to audiobooks instead of music . . . they’re just different enough. But, Gonna Fly Now is impossible to not get pumped up over.

      John, you are BRILLIANT!! I NEVER thought to listen to audio books!!!
      When training for the marathon over the winter, I was stuck on the treadmill (gag!) for most runs…and I would watch movies. Star Trek was the best one…

      I listen to music..but sometimes that is bothersome…never thought of books! LOVE THAT!!!
      Any Title suggestions?

        That really depends on what you’re into. I can listen to any of the Harry Potter books at any time, so if I know I’m going to be spending a ton of hours on the pavement for the next few weeks, and I’m not in the middle of something, I’ll just start with HP1 and work my way through all 7.

        On a Young Adult theme (I’m always looking for books that I’ll be able to share & talk about with my kids when they’re at the right age), I’m listening to a lot of Rick Riordan.

        I do find that I need some adventure when I’m listening – so while I loved The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lax, I don’t know if I’d recommend listening to it while running. Anything by Neil Gaiman works, as does most anything by Stephen King. If I’m finding that I’ve gotten myself so that I’m in a bad mood when running, I’ll listen to Christopher Moore or Carl Hiassen.

        The books I can listen to over & over again are:

        The Harry Potter series by JK Rowling
        The Stand by Stephen King
        Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman
        Fool by Christopher Moore
        Lamb, the Gospel According to Biff by Christopher Moore
        The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King
        Percy Jackson & the Olympians by Rick Riordan
        1984 by George Orwell
        The Song of Ice & Fire by George RR Martin

        Some of the books that I listened to & truly enjoyed because I had hours of training ahead of me, and there’s no way I’d likely have picked them up on my own:

        Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides
        The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
        The Southern Vampire Series by Charlaine Harris
        Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell

        I have a pretty sizable library of MP3 files if there’s anything you’re dying to listen to.

    I think, oddly, the area where I need to just stand taller is my career. Not that I don’t work hard, but the confidence is just not there, sometimes. And that has meant my passing up awesome opportunities that I could have been great at. I don’t want to do that anymore.

    You are an inspiration for me to get running again after the holidays. I took a little break after that half marathon of mine! Phew!

    Anyway, good luck and LOVE that your inner voice has changed back to telling you that you are a rocks star. 😉

      I am so proud of you for rocking your half!!! Way to go!
      It’s funny…yesterday I got all bundled up to go for a run…and it felt good…but that Rocky theme came on and boy did that pick up the pace! Can’t beat that song!!! :)

    I know this is an older post, but you had eleventy-million comments on your SITS girl post and I already knew (from seeing your tweets and comments at other blogs) that you’re a runner. So I came here. Hope you don’t mind.

    I’m in need of some inspiration with my own running these days (and writing for that matter) because it’s so hard to fit it all in, isn’t it?

    For my 40th birthday I took a leave of absence from teaching English to write and also decided to train for a marathon. I ran three back-to-back and then needed a break from the long stuff. PLUS I needed more time to write.

    I’m 43 now. And I swear I feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day for ANY of the things I want to accomplish. Books, marathons, oh yeah and parenting and wifing in a somewhat decent fashion…

    One step at a time, right? One word in front of the other. One day. And the next.

    Here’s to finding some balance in 2012.
    Or at least some contentment in the chaos.

    p.s. I need to eat better and suck at cooking healthfully. So I have a feeling I should hang out here more often!

      Of course I do not mind you here on this post! :)

      Three? Back to back? You are a hero! After finishing Pittsbirgh, I was toast. Did not want to put my body through that again. Then in Oct. did a half and that was doable. The training felt the same, but to be done in 2 hours? Quite awesome.

      The days do seem to get shorter the older we get, don’t they? What is up with that? No sir, I don’t like it. But, with this new year, I am for making wise decisions and keeping my focus on what makes ME happy. I’m half-way through my novel…and will finish and push it before the year is out.

      Please, do hang here! I will share any recipe you are looking for….except my sauce recipe. That would make the family natives too restless for my liking. :)
